Every collagen product on the shelf has vitamin C in it, and for a long time I filed that under things brands add so the ingredient list looks busier. Antioxidant, immunity, sure, fine.
Then I read how collagen actually gets made. Vitamin C is not an accessory here. It is the tool that does the work.
collagen has to be finished after it is built
Your cells assemble a collagen chain from amino acids in roughly the way you would expect. But that raw chain is not usable yet. It has to be modified, and the key modification is taking specific proline and lysine residues along the chain and hydroxylating them, which means attaching an oxygen and a hydrogen.
That step is what allows three strands to lock together into a stable triple helix. Get it right and you have collagen strong enough to hold a tendon together. Skip it and the helix falls apart at body temperature before it ever leaves the cell.
the enzymes run on vitamin c
Two enzymes carry out that hydroxylation: prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase. Each has an iron atom at its centre, and that iron gets oxidised in the course of the reaction. Once oxidised, the enzyme stops.
Vitamin C, ascorbate, is what reduces the iron back and restarts it. It is the thing that keeps the machine turning over. This is not a supplement industry talking point, it is a chapter in every biochemistry textbook, worked out in detail by Myllylä and colleagues back in 1984.
scurvy is the proof
The historical demonstration is right there. Sailors without fresh food got scurvy, and scurvy is essentially collagen construction shutting down across the entire body. Gums bleed and teeth loosen because the collagen holding them is not being replaced. Old wounds reopen. Long healed scars come apart. Skin bruises from nothing at all.
It is a horrible illness and it is also the clearest possible evidence that vitamin C is structural rather than optional. Your body replaces collagen constantly, and without vitamin C that replacement simply never finishes.
why pairing them makes sense
Think of it as materials and tools. Twenty grams of collagen protein is a serious delivery of the raw material your body builds structure from. Vitamin C is what lets it finish the job.
Sending them down together, in the same drink, at the same moment, is the sensible way to do it. A 2017 review in Nutrients laid out how many roles vitamin C plays in skin specifically, and collagen synthesis sits at the centre of all of them.
Ours comes from ascorbic acid, and one can gives you well over your daily value. It is doing real work in there.
