hydrolysed just means someone already did the chewing

Hydrolysed collagen. Collagen peptides. Collagen hydrolysate. For a while I genuinely thought these were three competing ingredients and that I was supposed to have an opinion about which one was best.

They are the same thing. The word just describes what was done to it before it reached you.

the raw version is too big to be useful

Collagen in its native form is a long triple helix. It is a beautiful structure and it is far too large for your gut to move across the intestinal wall intact. Eat it as is and most of it goes past you.

Hydrolysis is the step that cuts it. Enzymes break the long chains into short fragments, called peptides, that are small enough to be absorbed. That is the entire meaning of the word. Someone already did the chewing.

this is not theoretical, it has been measured in blood

The part that convinced me was Iwai and colleagues in 2005. They gave people gelatin hydrolysate by mouth and then looked in their blood. They found hydroxyproline-containing peptides circulating, and they identified the specific ones.

You can argue about outcomes in any nutrition study. It is much harder to argue with a peptide showing up in someone's bloodstream after they drank it.

Ohara and colleagues followed up in 2007 comparing hydrolysates from different sources and confirmed the same pattern, with the peptide profile varying by source.

the interesting part is what the fragments do

One fragment in particular, prolyl-hydroxyproline, tends to survive digestion and turn up in the blood. Shigemura and colleagues took that specific peptide to human skin fibroblasts, the cells that manufacture collagen, and found it influenced their behaviour.

That reframes the whole thing. The old assumption was that eating collagen just gives your body spare parts. The more interesting possibility is that these fragments also act as a signal, telling the cells that build collagen to get on with it.

Both routes lead somewhere good. You get the raw material and you get the nudge.

gelatin is the halfway house

Gelatin is collagen that has been partly broken down, which is why it gels and why cold bone broth sets in the fridge. Peptides are broken down further, which is why they dissolve clear in cold liquid and do not turn your drink into jelly.

That difference is the only reason a sparkling collagen drink can exist at all.

what we use

Hydrolysed bovine collagen peptides, grass fed, 22 grams of them delivering 20 grams of collagen protein per can. Dissolved cold, lightly carbonated, no chalk and no shaker bottle.

If a label says collagen without saying hydrolysed or peptides anywhere, that is worth a second look. The word is not decoration. It is the step that makes the ingredient work.
